One of the most common features in smart phone devices today is the built in speaker. You’ve probably seen this already, but there are actually several different ways that it works. The most basic of these is a pair of thin cones that house the microphone and speaker combination inside of them. The technology used for creating these is very similar to that used in conventional car stereos, using transducers and magnets to push waves through the medium they’re constructed in. They’re called conductors, after all. The difference lies in the fact that conductors don’t use electricity to create the waves – rather they’re powered by something else, such as an electric motor.
Conductors also work in smart phone uses in a different way. Instead of using a thin cone like the speakers do, they use a pair of long rods that connect to one another and then to the bottom of the unit. You’ll find these long rods in most mobile phones, although the shape may vary. Instead of a thin metal rod being connected to each other, there’s usually a rectangular piece with holes on it. This connection can be closed off with a plastic shield that houses the speaker and sensor.
Then there’s the speaker itself. The typical smart phone has two tiny speakers glued to the base and held in place with suction cups. These are comprised of tiny magnets attached magnetically to a metallic sheet that’s underneath the screen. The reason these speakers work this way is because when you press the buttons on the unit they push the magnets to the base and then to the speakers where they send electronic signals to the speakers themselves. This is essentially the same principle that’s used in car audio systems to make them sound so good.
Another feature present in smart phones that makes them so popular is the absence of the touch screen. Instead, users are forced to tap on the screen to get any kind of information, or to perform functions such as browsing the web or viewing photos. This is a huge advantage when compared to typical cell phones. With the absence of the screen you can also avoid the accidental pressing of the home key when turning the device on and off. This is why these devices have been growing in popularity since they first hit the market – they are much safer to use, especially for children.
But one of the biggest innovations in the world of smart phones is their voice coil technology. If you’re unfamiliar with what I’m referring to here, it’s basically the motor that drives your phone. Think of it as a speaker that has its own tiny magnet system inside of it. When you talk into the microphone on the device, the magnet system will react and make your voice vibrate through the device. This allows you to speak through your device just like you would with your normal earpiece, and it also has some amazing health benefits – for instance, if you have a bad cold or sinus infection, the magnets perforate your soft tissues in your throat causing them to become inflamed, which will help to clear up the infection.
The small magnets are powered by a small battery that lasts for about an hour on a single charge, so the longevity of these gadgets is quite impressive. They’re perfect for use when you need a little bit of time out of your day to simply relax and unwind. But because of their power, they’re also great for medical purposes – for example, there are many medical imaging devices currently on the market that incorporate voice coil motors, such as ultrasound machines, laparoscopes, and various other kinds of smart phone sensors. Some diagnostic equipment requires the use of tiny voice coil motors.
